The Nine-Square Grid

چکیده
Directly influenced by Colin Rowe’s essay “Mathematics of the Ideal Villa” (1947) and Warburgian art historical tradition, John Hejduk’s nine-square grid studio exercise had an ambiguous relation to instrumentality architectural history. When was copied in many architecture schools around world as a first-year project, initiating novice student realm composition, pedagogical interpretation its history varied. This paper questions relational model practice exercise, subsequently investigates reuse reinterpretation at Versailles school Ghent University 1980s. It proposes reading survival return this diagrammatic figure pedagogy villa late twentieth century reckoning with self-referentiality temporality lateness.

Random disease on the square grid
We introduce some generalizations of a nice combinatorial problem, the central notion of which is the so-called Disease Process. Let us color independently each square of an n×n chessboard black with a probability p(n), this is a random initial configuration of our process. Then we have a deterministic painting or expansion rule, and the question is the behaviour of the disease process determin...
متن کاملCircle Patterns with the Combinatorics of the Square Grid
Explicit families of entire circle patterns with the combinatorics of the square grid are constructed, and it is shown that the collection of entire, locally univalent circle patterns on the sphere is innnite dimensional. In Particular, Doyle's conjecture is false in this setting. MM obius invariants of circle patterns are introduced, and turn out to be discrete analogs of the Schwarzian deriva...
متن کاملOdd-Rule Cellular Automata on the Square Grid
An “odd-rule” cellular automaton (CA) is defined by specifying a neighborhood for each cell, with the rule that a cell turns ON if it is in the neighborhood of an odd number of ON cells at the previous generation, and otherwise turns OFF. We classify all the odd-rule CAs defined by neighborhoods which are subsets of a 3× 3 grid of square cells. There are 86 different CAs modulo trivial symmetri...
متن کاملFlexible Two-Dimensional Square-Grid Coordination Polymers: Structures and Functions
Coordination polymers (CPs) or metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted considerable attention because of the tunable diversity of structures and functions. A 4,4'-bipyridine molecule, which is a simple, linear, exobidentate, and rigid ligand molecule, can construct two-dimensional (2D) square grid type CPs. Only the 2D-CPs with appropriate metal cations and counter anions exhibit flexibi...
متن کاملInfinite Petri Nets: Part 1, Modeling Square Grid Structures
A composition and analysis technique was developed for investigation of infinite Petri nets with regular structure, introduced for modeling networks, clusters and computing grids, that also concerns cellular automata and biological systems. A case study of a square grid structure composition and analysis is presented. Parametric description of Petri nets, parametric representation of infinite s...
